Pd____ Before we take an in-depth look at sample Paper 1 essays, read these tips from Cambridge’s graders. For each, HIGHLIGHT the word or two that represents the most important idea.

Although the benefits of the Internet and social media to education and humanitarianism are clear, some critics may fear that access to technology could put minors in contact with strangers or inappropriate content. However, online research and social media sites in educational settings may be easily monitored and safely filtered through the schools’ firewalls. School districts in the United States and France, for instance, block access to content that their strict filters detect as inappropriate. This is not just suggested, but legally required through the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). Similarly, young people are introduced to societies’ needs by teachers and parents in the first place. Hence, it is important to recognize that interaction between a minor and groups like Interpal, Students Helping Students, and S.H.O., all occur through adult- monitored settings. Such precautions display the focus that is currently being put on Internet and social media safety. No one will deny that Internet-based technologies have created many complications in the realm of children’s safety. However, with new dangers have come new safeguards. The Internet and social media have not allowed parents and educators to ‘step back’ and have their jobs be taken from them. Rather, we have seen great tools and opportunities placed in the hands of those raising a new generation of children. Accessing information from all over the world or from myriad time periods in mere moments is a rare privilege that children of the past could never have imagined. Correspondingly, the ability to interact and help people all over the world is a duty even minors may now address. Access to the Internet and social media should be seen as some of the greatest benefits to minors, not their worst hindrances. Word Count: 683 ASSIGNMENT
