AI-generated Abstract

The book "Doing Your Research Project: A Guide for First-Time Researchers" by Judith Bell and Stephen Waters offers valuable insights for novice researchers in social, educational, and allied health practice. While well-structured and user-friendly, with a conversational tone and practical tools, the book has critical shortcomings regarding analytical depth, evaluation methods, and the handling of bias in research. Notably, it is primarily aimed at the UK audience and excludes significant scientific domains, thus limiting its broader applicability.

The aim of this paper is to assist the novice researcher in the research ethics application process. The novice researcher in this context refers to any researcher negotiating a research ethics application for the first time. This may be a student or a more experienced registered nurse engaged in research activity. The paper applies ethical principles to the varied elements of a research ethics application form to explain the theoretical basis of the application criteria. The impetus for this paper arose following an internal audit of the decisions made by the research ethics committee of the nursing department at the Institute of Technology in Tralee, Ireland. The audit revealed the common reasons why full approval was not granted following initial review. This information prompted the development of a paper which would assist novice researchers in avoiding common errors and omissions in the research ethics application process. Despite the specific requirements of individual resear...

A Pilot Study (PS) is a small-scale research project conducted before the final full-scale study. A PS helps researchers to test in reality how likely the research process is to work, in order to help them decide how best to conduct the final research study. In piloting a study, a researcher can identify or refine a research question, discover what methods are best for pursuing it, and estimate how much time and what resources will be necessary to complete the larger final version of the study. There is, however, a paucity in literature that focuses on using, reading and representing PSs. This article discusses the importance of a PS to test and identify how methods and ideas would work in practice when undertaking a qualitative PhD thesis. The proposed PS in this paper addressed many challenges, and the researcher reflected on different perspectives of their work including ethical, cultural, social and professional issues. By the end 2 of the PhD thesis, undertaken with the guidance of the PS, it was found that a well-conducted PS, giving a clear list of aims and objectives within a formal framework, can encourage methodological rigour and ensure the validity of both the study itself and the methodology applied. The objectives of this paper are thus threefold: first, to identify the issues within a specific qualitative PS prior to conducting the final study; second, to address the researcher's reflections on these findings and finally, to share the experiences and knowledge that a PS can be expected to bring.

This last chapter provides an outline of the most important social research ethics principles and values that should be considered by social science researchers and research ethics committees (RECs) who review social science research projects. The principle framework of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (2005) is primarily used to organise the relevant ethics principles and considerations. The following ten principles are considered: (1) Respect for human dignity; (2) Beneficence and non-maleficence; (3) Autonomy and informed consent; (4) Vulnerability; (5) Privacy, anonymity and confidentiality; (6) Equality, justice and equity; (7) Non-discrimination and non-stigmatisation; (8) Respect for cultural diversity and pluralism; (9) Social responsibility and integrity; and (10) Benefit sharing. Lastly, the most important and relevant ethics review questions for each of the principles and valu...

The process of gaining ethics approval is an essential step in conducting research. This paper acts as a beginners guide to the process of ethics approval for first time and student applicants, and offers some tips to planning for ethics approval as part of the research methodology to minimise any potential revisions the ethics committee may request. The paper also briefly discusses how seeking ethics approval can improve research practices and benefit research design.

Background: A growing number of faculty are engaging in research in health professions education. Suggestions continue to be made in the literature for a clear and less onerous pathway for the ethical review of this work. Aim: We aim to provide advice about the ethics application process for those conducting research in health professions education. Methods: We used critical reflection of our experiences as research ethics board (REB) members, applying for, reviewing and consulting about the ethics application process in both UK and Canadian health contexts in addition to evidence and advice that is available in the literature to inform the tips provided. Results: Twelve tips are offered to help faculty understand and navigate through the ethics application process. Conclusion: Health professionals have an important role to play in advancing the field of health professions education, and despite issues identified with current review pathways, REB review is in place to ensure that this work is undertaken safely and ethically. We believe the tips offered in this article will help faculty identify, and devise plans to address, some ethical issues that are common in health professions education research.

ABSTRACT This module will introduce you to the ethical concepts underlying applied ethical decision-making in the area of research involving human participants. We will also learn what the issues are that people involved in research on research ethics are concerned with. Ethics without an understanding of historical and legal context makes arguably little sense. It is for this reason that this module will begin with a brief history of research ethics and ends with a brief overview of the relevant national and international guidelines pertaining to ethical issues in research involving human participants.

The concurrent realities of growing numbers of master's students in health and social care subjects, and developments in research governance processes in the public sector are discussed as a context for master's level dissertation projects.

The writing style is appropriate to all levels and is totally accessible to the students I teach. Overall, this is a very welcome book for research.

Very user-friendly and interactive – an easy read for my students.

I have added this to the Dissertation Module, for the BA Education Studies. A very good guide in completing research.

This text is a stalwart in approaching independent projects and dissertations. The fourth edition keeps it sharp and current.

I so enjoyed reading this book because I felt like Zina was in the room talking to me and I was her student. She clearly understands undertaking research from a student's perspective. She has obviously drawn on a rich and lengthy experience demonstrated by the relevant questions she poses throughout the book and her writing is so easily accessible and understandable, even the bits students often find tricky. All aspects the process are covered, from preliminary thinking to actually getting started to finally sharing your research with others. A book I will definitely include in our reading list for next year.

This a very useful and comprehensive book for students studying research methods and/or dissertations students.

Simple and easy to use for my MSc Students especially those that have never done a dissertation.

Really useful text, accurate, brief and clear direction for students and staff. I do not manage research but supervise researchers and this is an excellent framework for creating excellence in this essential discipline.

Great book for beginner researchers

Content is appropriate for intended student population
