Bibliography

Transparency International defines corruption as an act that abuses the entrusted power for private gain. This means that it violates the rights of individuals that have bestowed power, authority, and legitimacy. Corruption varies in degree and nature depending on the level of its occurrence, people involved, and circumstances that motivate individuals to be corrupt. Modernization has transformed corruption, and people adopt new and complicated ways of concealing their fraudulent activities. This paper presents the causes and effects of corruption in the public and private sector.

Politics is an effective way of ensuring power and resources are shared equally among all individuals from different backgrounds within a specified jurisdiction. However, people have used political activities and offices to advance their gains and neglect the need to be accountable and responsible to the public. The emergence of political elites has created room for corruption to flourish in public and private offices because people no longer respect the need to develop national programs that will benefit citizens. They have diverted the resources of the public to achieve their gains without considering the impacts of their actions on other citizens. Politics has allowed corrupt officers to win elections and take powerful positions in government. Therefore, citizens continue to suffer because their interests are not addressed by those they expected would alleviate their problems.

Also, the existence of artificial scarcity of resources has pushed people to look for cheap ways of getting what they need. For instance, the scarcity of employment and investment opportunities has led to stiff competition for the limited available resources. Therefore, people use unorthodox ways to persuade those in charge of approving projects to allow them to continue with their investment projects. People with malevolent intentions continue to destroy the economy of their nations as they create false impressions of the scarcity of resources. The existence of unhealthy competitions among businesses forces some of them to use unethical ways to persuade their clients to buy their products. Government officials in charge of quality standards are usually bribed to cover the activities of such investors, and this promotes corruption in businesses. This violates the rights of citizens to access quality products and services.

Thirdly, the ethical qualities of people in authority have decreased, and their value system deteriorated due to lack of strong moral teachings and responsibilities. People no longer have respect for the old ideals of moral and honest service delivery procedures, and society has become a haven for individuals that disregard human dignity. It is necessary to explain that modernity has clouded the need to respect the positions and individuals placed to serve others. People have little respect for morals that guide service delivery and ensure others benefit from their services. Therefore, corruption has been fuelled by poor moral values and lack of respect for human life.

The present generation is full of corrupt activities because people fail to condemn them. There are no strong civil societies to rebuke and oppose corrupt leaders, and this promotes the flourishing of this behavior in generations. The American public forum is dominated by debates on gay marriages, foreign policies, and inflated health bills, but nobody seems to pay attention to the escalating cases of corruption in the public and private sectors. The younger generations do not see the need to fight corruption because their predecessors support and cultivate it through modern systems and activities.

Lastly, widespread poverty and illiteracy have contributed to endemic corruption in modern societies. There are efforts to educate people, especially the rural folks, to ensure they know their rights and freedoms to reduce corruption in their societies. However, these efforts seem to bear no fruits because poverty drives them to seek cheap and quick ways of accessing their needs. Also, poverty makes people desperate, and thus, they do anything that will ensure they have food on their tables. Therefore, corruption flourishes in most societies because people do not know their rights and those that do have limited resources to access them.

Corruption violates the rights and freedoms of individuals to get basic services from public and private offices. This means that this practice compromises the quality of services offered by employees in the public and private sectors and puts the lives of citizens at risk. Corrupt officials do not offer equal services to clients because they treat some with more interests than others. This violates the provisions of equality and the rights for justice in various issues. This makes public institutions and offices to become illegitimate because of misusing their democratic power for private gains.

Also, corruption hinders the effective development of political systems in a country. This vice promotes patronage that is serious threats to democratic processes. Most corrupt nations experience civil disobedience and political instability that hamper development projects. The introduction of multi-party democratic systems is usually hampered by the corruption that compromises the legitimacy of political parties and individuals. Civil disobedience and lack of trust in political institutions propel individuals to protest and demand the removal of their leaders from power.

Moreover, this vice stalls development projects and subjects citizens to abject poverty because of a lack of transparency and accountability in public offices. Corruption enables few individuals that have money to have their way and get what they want while those that do not have been forced to look for other alternatives. Poverty and unemployment are common occurrences in societies that condone corruption, and they cannot develop because of poor management systems. The need to offer quality services like improving infrastructure, medical facilities, schools, and social amenities is compromised by the lack of transparent processes of awarding tenders and distributing resources in a society.

Lastly, this vice discourages unity and cooperation in society because some individuals think they are more important than others. Unequal distribution of national resources and restricted access to public services lead to frustration and apathy among citizens, and this weakens the fabric that binds members of the society. This leads to social inequality and the emergence of class differences that violate the dignity and rights of individuals. Uncontrolled corruption widens the gap between the rich and poor, and this results in a weak civil society.

Corruption is caused by man-made factors like capitalism, lack of transparency and accountability, nepotism, tribalism, poverty, weak social and political structures, and poverty. This vice lowers the pace of national development, weakens societies, and increases poverty. Therefore, people should work hard to ensure they fight corruption by educating their members on the importance of transparent practices. Also, government systems should be programmed to detect and eliminate this vice, and those found promoting it should face harsh penalties.

Corruption is a big problem that affects societies all over the world. It slowly destroys trust, fairness, and moving forward. It’s been around for a long time, from ancient times to now, and it’s found in all different places, like politics and business. Corruption causes things like money problems, fights in politics, and unfairness in society. Corruption happens when people in power do bad things for their benefit. It’s not just about money; it happens in politics, businesses, and even in law enforcement. There are many kinds of corruption, like giving bribes, stealing money, favoring family and friends, and being unfair in hiring. All of these make it hard for countries and communities to grow and do well.

This essay is going to talk about corruption. We’ll look at where it comes from, how it shows up, and what it does to societies. By talking about it, we want to understand it better and find ways to stop it. We believe that if we are honest and responsible, and if we all work together, we can make a world where fairness wins over greed and justice wins over unfairness. Forms of Corruption:

Corruption comes in various forms, each with its own damaging effects on society. Some important of them are discussed here.

Bribery:  Bribery is a big problem that happens a lot, and it’s really harmful. It happens when someone gives money, gifts, or favors to someone in power, like a government official or a businessperson, in exchange for special treatment or favors. This can happen in different ways, like giving money for a good job or paying off someone to get things done faster. Bribery makes things unfair because it means people with money or power can get what they want, even if it’s not right. It also makes it hard for everyone else to trust the people in charge. This can lead to bad decisions being made and resources being used in the wrong way, which hurts everyone. Misuse of Funds and Resources: Embezzlement happens when someone takes things, like money or stuff, that they’re supposed to be taking care of for someone else. It’s kind of like stealing, but it’s done by people who are supposed to be responsible. The people who embezzle are often in charge of money or things, like the person who looks after the money at a club or the manager at a company. Instead of using these things for what they’re meant for, they use them for themselves. This causes a big problem because it means the people who are supposed to get the money or stuff don’t get what they need. Embezzlement hurts everyone because it’s not fair. It also makes it hard for people to trust others. This can lead to problems for organizations and the people who depend on them.

Extortion is when someone scares others to get what they want. They might threaten to hurt them or their things if they don’t give them money or stuff. There are many ways extortion can happen. For example, someone might threaten to hurt someone if they don’t give them money, or they might demand money to keep a secret. It’s a scary way for people to get what they want, even if it’s not right. Extortion is a big problem because it makes people feel scared and unsafe. It can also make them lose money or things they care about. This makes it hard for people to feel safe and happy without worrying about being threatened. Conflict of Interest:  Conflict of interest happens when someone has two different goals that don’t work well together. This can cause unfair or unfair decisions, especially when someone’s personal goals don’t match their duties. For example, if a judge’s family member is involved in a case they’re working on, it might be hard for them to be fair. Or if a doctor owns part of a company that makes a certain medicine, they might want to prescribe it more, even if it’s not the best choice for the patient. Conflict of interest is a problem because it can lead to unfair treatment or decisions. It can also make people not trust those who are supposed to be looking out for their best interests. Causes of Corruption Corruption can be caused by various factors, each contributing to the spread and persistence of this harmful phenomenon. Some of the main causes include: Lack of Transparency:  Lack of transparency means things aren’t clear or open. When stuff isn’t transparent, it’s easier for bad things like corruption to happen. This is because people can do sneaky stuff without others knowing. For example, if a government or company doesn’t share info about its decisions or money, it’s hard for people to know if everything is fair. Without transparency, those in charge can do things for themselves without getting in trouble. Weak Laws and Rules:  Weak laws and rules mean that the rules we have aren’t strong or helpful. When rules aren’t good, it’s easier for bad things like corruption to happen. This is because there aren’t enough rules to stop people from doing bad stuff. For example, if there are rules against being corrupt but they aren’t followed properly, people might still do bad things without getting in trouble. Or if the rules about how businesses should work aren’t clear, it’s easier for them to do things that are wrong without getting caught. Economic Inequality:  Economic inequality means that some people have a ton of money and stuff, while others don’t have much at all. This difference between the rich and the poor can cause problems in our community. For instance, when there’s a big gap between how much money people have, it’s not fair. The rich might get better chances and power, while the poor struggle to get by. Economic inequality can also make it easier for bad things like corruption to happen. When some people have a ton of money and power, they might use it to get even more, even if it means doing something wrong. Political Instability:  Political instability happens when the leaders or government of a country aren’t steady or strong. This can happen because of fights, arguments, or changes in who’s in charge. When there’s political instability, it can cause problems for the country and its people. For example, it might be hard for the government to decide things, or for people to feel safe. It can also make bad things like corruption more likely because there isn’t enough control or order. To make things better, countries need leaders who are strong and steady. This means having leaders who can make choices and keep things peaceful. By working together to fix political instability, countries can make a safer and more peaceful place for everyone who lives there. Fighting Corruption: What We Can Do We can fight corruption by doing different things: Making Strong Rules: Governments can make laws that say corruption is wrong. They can also give big punishments to people who do corrupt things. These rules help stop people from doing bad stuff. Being Open and Honest: We can share information about how the government spends money and makes decisions. This helps make sure everything is fair and clear. Making Sure the Rules Are Followed: We need to have groups that make sure the rules are followed. These groups can check if people are being corrupt and make them pay for it. Being Good and Honest: It’s important to learn about why it’s wrong to be corrupt and to do the right thing. We can have lessons that teach people, especially those working for the government, about being honest and fair. Speaking Up: If we see someone being corrupt, we can tell someone about it. Some rules protect people who report corruption. Speaking up helps stop bad things from happening. Working Together with Other Countries: Corruption happens everywhere, so we need to work with other countries to stop it. We can share information and help each other fight corruption together. Getting Everyone Involved: People in our community can work together to stop corruption. We can join groups that fight corruption and tell others about why it’s important to be honest and fair. By doing these things, we can all help make our community a better and fairer place for everyone. Conclusion: So, corruption is a big problem that makes societies not good. It makes people not trust the government and makes decisions unfair. But if we do things like making strong rules, being open and honest, and making sure everyone follows the rules, we can make things better. We all need to work together to stop corruption and make our community fairer for everyone. If we stand against corruption, we can make the future better for everyone.
